The industry has been consolidating. Governments and regulators are putting pressure on prices and requiring that margins be capped. Customers are alleging that products have been excessively marketed as "cure-alls" and that this has resulted in harm--and sometimes worse. The media have exposed a number of scandals in which companies have failed to appropriately disclose relevant information to purchasers and regulators. The industry scores poorly in surveys of trustworthiness and appears to get little credit for improving quality of life.
